Secret Japan. Masterpieces of the 1800 photography

 

 

From the 5th March untile the 5th of June 2016, at the Palazzo del Governatore in Parma (Italy), the exhibition Secret Japan: Masterpieces of the Photography of 1800 will shed light on one of the most important chapters of the history of Photography, the school of Yokohama (1860-1910).

The project

The exposition celebrates the pact between Parma and Kagawa and also the 150° anniversary of the signature of the Friend and Commence Agreement between Italy and Japan. Enrico II Borbone, brother of the last duke of the Duchy of Parma, will ideally guide the visitor throw the exposition: he and his wife made a long journey in Japan between 1887 and 1889, coming back with a big collection of japan masterpieces.

The exhibition

The exposition itinerary turns around the masterpieces of the school of Yokohama, one of the best in photography in 1800, and the experience of the globetrotters’ journey. It follows a thematic itinerary with little areas in with eight precious album-souvenir with their cover in Japanese varnish, 20 rare carte de visite, 12 polychrome xylographic reproduction by the masters of  the ukiyo-e such as Hokusai, Hiroshige and Utamaro. Photographs will be related with some rare examples of decorative Japanese art, such as a samurai armour of the XVIII century, masks of the classical theatre nō and some beautiful kimono.
